We’ve tried to answer a few common questions that we get on a daily basis! If you can’t find the answer, please email us and we’ll be able to assist you!
What should I wear to my trial lesson?
We generally recommend that you wear loose comfortable sports clothing, such as a tracksuit for your taster session. There is no need for specialist martial arts clothing. The uniforms are only generally required if you choose to join.
Do I need to bring anything else to the trial lesson?
Please bring a good-sized drink for hydration.
Will I have to pay anything on the day?
No. There should be no charge for the introductory lessons and there will be no hidden charges. If you choose to join a school after your free trial, we can complete your paperwork on the day.
What else can I expect from my first class?
When you arrive for your first class, you will be introduced to one of our Instructors. That Instructor will work with you, and any other new students, throughout the entire class – you will not be left alone to figure it out on your own or feel lost among the more experienced students. The Instructor will explain some basic training etiquette, talk to you about the structure of the class, teach you some of the fundamental techniques and help guide you as you learn new skills. We will make every effort to make sure you feel comfortable and we encourage you to ask questions and work at your own pace.
Are the classes safe?
In a nutshell, very. Regular classes are non-contact, so training is done on special martial arts equipment, not people, as most of our members attend classes to increase fitness, tone up and improve their self defence skills whilst having fun learning an effective martial art at the same time.
How fit do I need to be?
All our training is structured and we treat all our new students as ‘unfit’ unless they tell us otherwise! We allow you to train at your own pace and encourage you to reach your desired fitness level. We know you will make rapid progress once training structured class regardless of your physique, ability, fitness level or experience.
Will I feel out of place to begin with?
It is natural that everyone taking up Kickboxing for the first time will feel slightly nervous and our Instruction Team are experienced in recognising this and will do their best to put you at ease straight away. Don’t worry as all classes have a friendly atmosphere and other beginners join regularly all year round, meaning there will always be someone at your stage for you to enjoy training with.
How quickly will I progress?
We provide high quality instruction through a structured syllabus taking you from your first grade of White Belt through to Black Belt 1st Degree, and if it is combined with your commitment to regular training, you will make fast progress. It is not uncommon for our kickboxing students, with regular training and commitment, to be ready to take their Black Belt 1st Degree in 2/3 years.
Are the Instructors qualified?
All of our Instructional Team undertake rigorous training to ensure that they meet our very high standards. As well as being Black Belts in Kickboxing, they are friendly, professional and helpful. In addition to coaching courses attended, they are also Enhanced DBS checked for their suitability for working with children and are first aid trained.
What kit will I need if I join?
There are numerous items of kit that are available, please ask for an equipment list which the instructors will talk you through.
I’m a little nervous about joining – is the atmosphere competitive or aggressive?
Almost everyone is a little nervous about attending his or her first class and that is perfectly understandable. We are very proud of our family friendly, positive environment where everyone helps and encourages each other. Our goal is to make every student feel welcome and comfortable each time they walk through our doors.
At Chiron Martial Arts you are part of a team and should never feel that you are competing against your fellow students. We believe that martial arts schools should provide an environment where everyone feels safe to learn and make mistakes, not a place to be humiliated, intimidated, or treated disrespectfully.
Do I have to be in great shape to join your classes?
Absolutely not, one of the many benefits of martial arts training is the exercise but you certainly don’t need to be in shape to get started. As a new student, you are encouraged to work at your own pace and you will never be asked to do anything you aren’t ready for.
You will find that by coming to class you will quickly feel better, increase your flexibility, become stronger, improve your overall fitness level, and even lose weight if that is one of your goals. We often have new students that haven’t exercised in years and they can’t believe how much better they feel in just a short time. No matter what your level of physical fitness is, we invite you to join us and get in the best shape of your life.
I’m concerned that martial arts will make my child aggressive or teach them to bully others.
No need to worry – while many people assume that martial arts teaches aggression, the opposite is actually true. The study of martial arts is based on respect, honour, self-control and discipline.
Countless articles have been published by Doctors and therapists who stress the many benefits of martial arts. Proper instruction will help build self-confidence, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and concentration. We talk to the children about the proper use of martial arts and we expect students to conduct themselves with respect, discipline and “Black Belt attitude” both inside and outside of the school.
Can martial arts training improve my child’s grades?
Yes! Students are taught to practice focus and concentration skills both inside and outside of the school which can lead to better grades. We have had many teachers (and parents) comment on what a difference they have seen in their students once they begin training in the martial arts.
What is the best way to get started?
The best way to get started is to send an e-mail to info@chironmartialarts.co.uk, and set up a convenient time for you to come in and meet with one of the Instructors, watch a class if you like, and ask any questions you may have.
